Homecoming 2022!

Updated: Jun 17, 2023

Hey guys! I wanted to share with you my experience with setting up Homecoming for my school!

In Texas, Homecoming is a BIG deal in high schools and colleges. Fortunately, I was blessed with the opportunity to orchestrate Homecoming along side the faculty and staff.

At the end of October, I was tasked with reaching out to faculty and coaches to gather up the Homecoming Court, which was coined as the Lucky 12!

6 females and 6 males were chosen to represent the school based on their academic achievements and outstanding character on campus.

Below is the requirements for students to be considered:

This process was very difficult because most professors did not reach out but I made sure to visit as many faculty members face to face as I could.

Once the nominees were announced, I received feedback from many students on campus who were upset about not being nominated. I had to explain to them that students were chosen by professors, not their peers and there were requirements to be followed. This was done to award students based on the merit system and not popularity.

Below is the email sent out to the student body regarding the winners:

In this email, the Homecoming Semi-Formal is mentioned. The Student Government Association (SGA) funded this event after I proposed it as a bill. This was the first year it was done and I am hoping to make it a tradition for many years to come!

During this event, the Lucky 12 were sashed and handed an award by the faculty member who nominated them.

There was also 2 sets of performers! The leaders of the Country Dance Club and the Gold Line, our drill team.

The event began at 7pm but some students and I began set up at noon! We worked diligently to represent the school and ensure other students would have a great time.

At 7:45pm, the Country Dance Club performed for the first time in public and put on a wonderful show!

At 8:30, the Gold Line performed to get the crowd ready for the announcement of the nominees.

At 8:35, the court was announced!

One by one they were recognized for their achievements, major, and positions held on campus. They were handed a certificate and sashed by the professor or coach who nominated them.

It was a great ending to an exciting day!

On November 5th was the Homecoming game where the King and Queen would be announced. Another SGA member and I prepared the flowers, crowns, and sashes. As we were getting ready for the game, we found out that 2 queens were chosen due to a tie in the voting! We had to scramble and prepare another bouquet of flowers and plan out who would get the crown and who would get the sash.

This is the whole court on the field as well as the winners after they were crowned and sashed! Not only was this a huge success for the school but it was a wonderful opportunity for me to set up the majority of the 2 events!

Since I go to a private school, our campus is very small and tight nit. We always advertise community and the "Ramily" but since COVID, there has not been much of either. Therefore, I strive to unite the students together and bring back college traditions with the help of SGA and other students.
